Social Networks

For some reason I thought I could do a recap of the Library2.Oakton assignment the day before orientation. Well, that became a monumental task because no sooner than I got to Week 2 Gretchen got me on another "Newspaper non-delivery" issue so half my day was taken up trying unsuccessfully, to resolve the matter. Does anyone know which of these net-working, book-marking, face-booking del.icio.us methods I could use in MySpace to get a response from the Newspaper billing department in a timely manner. If I'd gotten a grip on this Instant Messaging thingy then maybe I could IM someone. I have read the literature, played around on the sites a bit but I am not keen on creating any accounts. These social websites have bombarded us at such a high rate of speed that already I am confused and I have only played with the del.icio.us thingy. The one big plus is the accessibility from anywhere (Didn't I say this before? Oh, well it is what it is) but the openness to having information edited or falsified is one reason I don't think they are trustworthy.

Del.icio.us----Yummy -Yummy

Oh well, another avenue to socialize. For a moment I thought I would be getting into foods, recipes, and flavors and all that good stuff, only to discover this delicious thing is another social bookmarking site. I am sure I could share my favorite websites, with my favorite recipes, vacation spots, and restaurants in a number of other ways but hey, delicious is simply delicious. Yes I am stuck on the taste thing. Where I am from delicious conjures up tasty, appetizing, mouth-watering, scrumptious, yummy and much more.

One advantage of this tool in settings such as schools, libraries or any other organization is that it could prove very helpful for research purposes. It's a nifty way to keep track of all your online sources. And the big plus for all these social sites is that they are accessible from anywhere. Thanks Richard. Didn't I learn that recently? Glad I attended your last drop-in session.

FLICKR Flickers on YouTube

Appropriately named since cameras videos and flashing lights come into play. I am definitely sold on the benefits of these two social software applications. Flickr especially even though both are cost effective ways of disimmenating information, and engaging users in ways that they can expand their social network. For ease I think the use of Flickr would seem the popular tool of choice for such like documentaries, weddings, art/museum exhibits, presentations, class and community projects, inventories. YouTube I would imagine is a photo-journalist's dream come true. As soon as Santa brings me that digital camera I'll be taking pictures of Asian Longhorn Beetles and will be trying to figure out the flickr jargon as I start a photostream. Why beetles? Well, I am not particularly keen on sharing pictures that may come back to haunt me. I really enjoy looking at other people's pictures though. But since no one seem to be fond of beetles I will load up on them to scare folks from my site. Well I might substitute a spider if I can figure out how to upload one from my PC. Oops! The spider just made off with a fly so maybe a couple of toads will do. Hi Trisha!

My Wacky Wiki Thoughts

I think I am too much of a techno novice to give an opinion on Wikis. Nonetheless I got the wiki concept and think it is a good repository for information that folks in a controlled setting can access, modify and collaborate. I just never got the chance to edit the site for this project because I needed administrator permission. And since I have read a bit about Wikipedia I will agree that its openess for editing and misinformation renders it totally untrustworthy as a source of reference.

My Thoughts on RSS Feeds

Well here I am on the week 2 assignment totally intimidated by new techno acronyms. I like Oprah's twist Ready for Some Stories. RSS Feeds seems to be a pretty cool technology. Having updated information delivered to your site without having to site-hop truly saves on time. I can see RSS Feeds as a library users' Bonus. I experimented a bit but was totally overwhelmed by the number of updates to my feeds so the one thing I learned to do very well was UNSUBSCRIBE.

My Thoughts on Blogging

Just when my creative thinking took recess someone threw this rubber iguana on my lap. Am I not a bit old for so much fun? It might be a worthwhile use of time creating a huge poster explaining the difference between a magazine and a journal.
